I don't think they would be particularly nice about it, but they will let you in for sure once they are satisfied that you are a US Citizen. An expired passport would tend to prove that pretty quickly. In fact, you can present yourslef at a border without any documentation and as long as you can prove you are a citizen, they have to let you in.

What terminal would this be at?
I flew out LHR T2 ten days ago, and nobody asked for my passport.
