Looking at the photo on the TSA website, in THIS case I think dumping the terminal was a prudent move.

How would looking at the FAKE file photos of the FAKE bomb that the TSA is distributing with this press release help in any way?

Sorry, NO props needed on a jet!

So yes, they have shown a picture of a "nasty looking" IED, but that was probably something their own guys put together and photographed two years ago, and they decided to pull this photo out of the files for this press release.

My first thoughts too. However, the caption tag on the photo agrees with the press release:

Date Picture Taken: 5/8/2009 6:46 PM
Camera Model: Cannon Power Shot A460

A 5 megapixel beginner level $124-on-Amazon camera. Yea, the kind of high tech forensics tool the EWR TSA CSI Department would employ. ^

This event at EWR is very difficult to find mention of on a Google search. I finally found another story.

"Security agents at a screening station thought there might be a pipe bomb in the bag. It turns out that the item was a prop from a movie set.

More than 20 police and emergency vehicles were on the tarmac at Newark Liberty International Airport's Terminal B on Friday(May 8) at about 6:30 p.m.

There was a partial evacuation of the termial for a short period of time. Gates 50-57, the security checkpoint and the baggage room were all cleared while the device was tested for explosives."

Who is the Mystery Pax? My first guess was "Hollywood pyro tech". But the guys at IATSE Local 44 are pros, ^ they would know how to ship their wares, and they travel enough to know not to take it on a plane. Pax checked NINE bags. At today’s bag fees, who can afford that? Someone not paying out of their own pocket.

Trite Alert: The b*mb is wired with a Red wire and a Blue wire. Only the Mayberry bomb squad trainer who has seen too many Hollywood B movies would use the “The H-b*mb Big Acme Red LED timer*(*required component) is down to 5 seconds, do I cut the Blue wire or the Red wire?” color code.

Right first guess: movie prop man. The top ones have BATF pemits etc. to own inert replica stuff as well as use the real stuff for special effects. That is why he was allowed on his way. :td: to TSA PV for not mentioning the words "movie prop" in the dramatic press release. :td:

Moral to the story: Some props should not be put on jets.

It figures the TSA would leave out the reason why it was in the bag and why the passenger was allowed to continue their flight. I would have dumped the terminal for something that looked like that. However I do think the passenger should have been arrested and charged for what happened.

People -- read the article, read the caption, see the TSA deception. The picture does not say "Replica IED found yesterday by TSA at EWR", it just says "Replica IED". By implication, they lead you to BELIEVE this is a photo of the device found in the course of the search at EWR, but neither the photo caption nor the article says that it is. So yes, they have shown a picture of a "nasty looking" IED, but that was probably something their own guys put together and photographed two years ago, and they decided to pull this photo out of the files for this press release. What was found a EWR was probably a Sony Play Station or something like that.

Nice try, but if THAT particular playstation came through my bag room, it would be bells and whistles all around. That is like a prototype IED from the movies..... wait a minute, it is from the movies! I would still have pressed the panic button because it looks like a complete assembly ready to go with any kind of signal. We have Bomb Appraisal Officers here and would have called them in within a minute or two at the most. Inert or not, that looks nasty as hell.
