Us immigration

I couldn't help but wonder how US immigration works, I'm under the impression that domestic and international flights depart from the same terminal at airports - in this case - how to they split international/domestic arrivals so that the international arrivals go to immigration and the others go to baggage claim?
thanks

Each airport is different, but most have dedicated international arrival gates that lead directly into the immigration hall. Usually coming off the plane you will see the locked door where you would go in if it were a domestic flight. Some airports have dedicated terminals for international arrivals.
