My parents have just come back from a trip starting and ending at JFK. My mom had already told me that their arrival had been a very psotive experiance this time around. Practically no one shouting or being nasty to "stupid tourists". Not only the Immigrations folks were pleasant but also the Security Checkpoint were pleasant and even helpful.
It was crowned on their way home dad had droped his wallet at the security checkpoint without noticing and the personal there went out of their way to return it to my dad. They had already moved away form the area to put on their shoes again when the lady came to him (had his german photo ID in it) and asked him if he was missing something.
Mom said you know all these additional measures would be so much easier to deal with (and probably more acceptable to travellers) if people were nice and helpful. And if travellers weren't made to so feel uncomfortable and completely unwelcome they probably wouldn't be so resentful of all the measures that have been put into place.
