Not weird at all. Prior to the current insanity I would visit SFO a couple of times a year to look at the art in the International Terminal, admire the aircraft, and inhale the atmosphere and bustle of people coming and going from points around the world.

I do the same thing in rail stations when abroad.

What is sad is that you can't do this whenever you desire without jumping through excessive hoops.

In my station no gate pass unless you are meeting a um or handicapped person & even that is on an individual basis.

I have been given gate passes on several occasions within the last year. No big deal. My reasons have included meeting someone at a gate, not wanting to wait in line at the counter to talk to a knowledgeable agent, not wanting to wait in line at the counter to check-in w/ paper, and going to the club.
