checking luggage and transit through the US

Hey guys,

Can anybody tell me if it is true that I have to recheck my luggage if I transit through the US? To make it simpler, say I am on a flight SJU-EWR-CDG, will I be able to get my luggage back at EWR ?

For the story, I just dont want the flight EWR-CDG (the round trip CDG-SJU is cheaper for me than EWR-SJU with my program) so if I cannot get my luggage back at EWR, it is a problem for me...

Thanks

edit : i posted here because I think that it is due to some TSA policy (to re-check the luggage).

Last I checked, SJU was an airport in the USA. Granted some folks would like to have that not be the case, but as it stands right now, Puerto Rico is a U.S. Territory.

Yeah I know but on a trip CDG-PHL-JFK, I had to recheck the luggage so that's why I ask...

You always collect luggage at you point of entry into the USA. Since SJU is already in the USA it'll check through to CDG going that direction. Coming from CDG to SJU you would collect it in EWR and then be expected to re-check it after clearing customs, which you could just skip if you also are planning on skipping the flight.

It is a CBP policy, not a TSA one.

Are you really going to buy a ticket SJU-CDG just to get from SJU to EWR, or am I misunderstanding your post completely?

Chances are pretty remote you can get them to "short check" your luggage to EWR unless you are on a flight into EWR (overnight) and then flying out the following day. (but less than 24 hours to avoid paying for a stopover).

If you can get the bag to the gate you can gate check it and tell them to check it to EWR without mentioning CDG.
