Did TSA cut my jacket?

I flew from Baltimore to Miami last week, placing my leather jacket in my checked luggage just before checking it, seeing as it was unnecessary weight for me to carry, but most importantly, not needed at all in Miami.

As I unpacked in Miami, I had a notice that the checked bag was searched by TSA. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I put everything away in the room I was staying in, hung up the jacket, and didn't touch it except to pack it again yesterday for home. It was then that I noticed there is about a quarter-sized obvious cut in the shoulder of the jacket. My first thought was that perhaps it got caught when they rezipped the suitcase, but after I thought about it more I realized there's no way that happened, someone intentionally cut a hole in the jacket, probably looking at something they assumed was suspicious.

It couldn't possibly be an animal or insect, it wasn't an accidental tear, and I certainly didn't wear the jacket in the 80 degree weather in Miami. It wasn't there when I put it in the suitcase before checking it, and TSA did say they opened the bag to inspect it. Why would an officer cut it without making note that they had to do so? I did have a camera battery in the inside pocket of the jacket, but why cut a hole?

I'm filing a damage report with them and hoping they'll send me some cash to replace it. Has anyone ever seen this?

Welcome to FlyerTalk, winsten007, and good luck on your claim.

But something tells me the sun will rise in the West before you see any $$$'s from TSA/DHS.

Please keep us advised on your progress.

You really think the TSA would admit to damaging your belongings?
