Shoes off at security?

Shoes off at security?
I had a trip ANC-DCA this last week, and both at ANC and DCA they were only making you take your shoes off if they alarmed. When did this happen? (Not that I'm complaining.)

I sure hope this is an indication they're relaxing the shoe carnival. I won't get my hopes up though.
