Will empty plastic bag confuse TSA?
 

Stupid question but this is kind of a followup where TSA wouldn't allow my single 3 ounce shampoo bottle through security without being in a plastic zip-lock bag. Do you think TSA will throw a fit if I put 3 empty zip lock bags in a plastic tray with no bottles? I'm gonna try this as a test.

Why? Just to annoy them?

Just put your 3 oz shampoo in your pocket next time and breeze through the WTMD without buying a ticket to the Baggie Carnival, if you're so inclined.

I don't think it is humanly possible to answer your question.

1) Exhibit A: There was a recent thread which reported using a bag provided at LAX for the passengers' convenience, only to be advised on their return, and I believe it was Seattle - but I am not positive, that it was not an acceptable bag. You could probably still find this on the site.

2) The TSA has gone on record that they vary their procedures to keep ahead of the bad guys. Their plastic bag policy may very well be one of these moving targets.

3) I recently bought a table saw from a major department store, and every one of the plastic bags was labelled "this is not a toy". Well first, imagine my disappointment. I was hoping for a table saw, and maybe a toy, something like we used to look forward to at the bottom of Cracker Jacks.

But I digress, if it is not a "toy", what could it be? TSA may very well have a position on this subject.

Well, they might be confused, but I wouldn't read to much into it. They could think you're weird, which certainly is confusing if you look otherwise completely normal.

On the other hand, if you get comments like "you can only have one one quart bag" or similar...

All in all pretty much a waste of time, but exactly the thing I like to do myself from time to time: something different.

I think it would be a lot more fun if you put through an empty plastic bag but insisted that there was something in it.

Better yet, bring a whole (unopened) box of quart ziploc baggies. Tell them you are taking them to the poor people who cannot find them in their city, and want to fly - you are their only hope, their only salvation, their only prayer to be able to fly! (voice getting steadily louder and more dramatic)

Just fill it up with as much air as you can before zipping it shut and if they ask tell them that you're transporting a liquid....in a gaseous state! :p Then watch them REALLY get confused.

At what age does a child know you shouldn't put it over one's head and suffocate with it, and at what age is a child literate enough to read the warning?

I ask anyone to thumb through the owner's manual of their automobile, and I will bet you will find close to 40% of the contents are warnings, and have nothing to do with the operation of the vehicle or its maintenance.

When are we going to accept responsiblity for our own stupidity? Lets stop supporting the legal profession and killing trees in the process with copious written disclaimers.
