Will empty plastic bag confuse TSA?

Stupid question but this is kind of a followup where TSA wouldn't allow my single 3 ounce shampoo bottle through security without being in a plastic zip-lock bag. Do you think TSA will throw a fit if I put 3 empty zip lock bags in a plastic tray with no bottles? I'm gonna try this as a test.

tifosi chris Apr 3, 2007 8:34 pm

Why? Just to annoy them?

cpx Apr 3, 2007 8:38 pm

they wouldn't even notice it... without any liquid in it

Just put your 3 oz shampoo in your pocket next time and breeze through the WTMD without buying a ticket to the Baggie Carnival, if you're so inclined.

I don't think it is humanly possible to answer your question.

1) Exhibit A: There was a recent thread which reported using a bag provided at LAX for the passengers' convenience, only to be advised on their return, and I believe it was Seattle - but I am not positive, that it was not an acceptable bag. You could probably still find this on the site.

2) The TSA has gone on record that they vary their procedures to keep ahead of the bad guys. Their plastic bag policy may very well be one of these moving targets.

3) I recently bought a table saw from a major department store, and every one of the plastic bags was labelled "this is not a toy". Well first, imagine my disappointment. I was hoping for a table saw, and maybe a toy, something like we used to look forward to at the bottom of Cracker Jacks.

But I digress, if it is not a "toy", what could it be? TSA may very well have a position on this subject.

Hmm.. are you not aware that some child could put this over their head and suffocate themselves with it?

Sanosuke!

Most of the time they don't even notice it with liquids in it.

What if the child is too young to read? :D

Well, they might be confused, but I wouldn't read to much into it. They could think you're weird, which certainly is confusing if you look otherwise completely normal.

On the other hand, if you get comments like "you can only have one one quart bag" or similar...

All in all pretty much a waste of time, but exactly the thing I like to do myself from time to time: something different.

HTB.

Think of the Children who cannot read! What will we do for them!!!

mikeef Apr 4, 2007 12:08 pm

I think it would be a lot more fun if you put through an empty plastic bag but insisted that there was something in it.

Better yet, bring a whole (unopened) box of quart ziploc baggies. Tell them you are taking them to the poor people who cannot find them in their city, and want to fly - you are their only hope, their only salvation, their only prayer to be able to fly! (voice getting steadily louder and more dramatic)

Just fill it up with as much air as you can before zipping it shut and if they ask tell them that you're transporting a liquid....in a gaseous state! :p Then watch them REALLY get confused.

At what age does a child know you shouldn't put it over one's head and suffocate with it, and at what age is a child literate enough to read the warning?

I ask anyone to thumb through the owner's manual of their automobile, and I will bet you will find close to 40% of the contents are warnings, and have nothing to do with the operation of the vehicle or its maintenance.

When are we going to accept responsiblity for our own stupidity? Lets stop supporting the legal profession and killing trees in the process with copious written disclaimers.

Okay hypothetically I am traveling by air with a child, and the child gets a hold of one of the mandated 1 quart liquid zippable bag they found on the floor that the TSA at some airports makes available. After placing it over their heads they suffocate. Now this raises two issues;

1) As the bags (at least all the ones I have seen) do not have a disclaimer, should I bring suit against the TSA, for creating a dangerous environment and providing unsafe devices? If affirmative I would appreciate the name of your attorney.

2) Of lesser importance, as the child expired are they still considered a passenger or must they go as cargo?

Here's A New Idea For Plastic Bag Search

So, we have the ruling that the "Kip Hawley Is An Idiot" trick is free speech, right?

So, what else is free speech? (heh heh heh)

I'm going to print out some of the most outrageously offensive internet porn and make my own labels for deodorant, shampoo, etc. Toss into plastic bag. Watch the fun ensue.

Hey, you were the one who said I had to whip it out and put it in a CLEAR bag. It's my right to use Woman-And-Horse brand shampoo.

:) Thoughts?

Lumpy Apr 4, 2007 11:27 pm

IMHO, TSA would be stunned and intellectually bashed by a plastic bag of hammers...

and add the playing of the Star Spangled Banner in the background while you are saying this.

:D Just last week I completely zoned out (it was before 6am) at IAH and forgot to take out my plastic bag :o . Screeners didn't notice a thing.

Lately I've been leaving my Freedom Baggie(TM) in my bag with no problem whatsoever ... until yesterday. At DCA they scrambled called code words, etc. until they opened my bag and discovered my baggie. They then proceeded to scold me for leaving it in my bag. When they found another baggie in another one of my bags (I was traveling with my family) they asked to see my first (cleared) bag again. I explained that it had already been cleared. They then asked *specifically* for the baggie. I opened my cleared bag, realized there were two baggies in there (they had obviously missed one), and showed one of them for inspection. What a waste of time and money :td:

Exactly. Nothing but very expensive Kabuki Theatre.

Move along, folks, no real security; nothing to see here.

I've been leaving my Kip Hawley and Michael Chertoff are Both IDIOTS Baggie in my bag lately, and usually no mention of it. Looks to me like the screeners are finally becoming disillusioned with their cowardly leadership. Big problem when screeners begin ignoring such obvious rules - wonder which other rules they're willing to overlook? One of these days we might find that 43,000 fellow Americans are a little less willing to take away sick children's medicine or unwilling to forcibly "divest" Americans of bottled water in AUGUST, for chrissakes. One can hope.

Hartmann Apr 9, 2007 12:22 pm

I walked through security at IAH with my plastic bag inside my suitcase (B terminal), no one said a word.

At CRW of all places I was reprimanded and told to "next time make sure your plastic baggie is visible"... I replied "you couldn't tell it was a quart size bag on the x-ray?", he just looked at me. Whatever, it was CRW and there were 8 TSA employees for an airport that has maybe 3-4 gates being used at a time. I could hear crickets when I walked through.

Um ... 'welcome to Flyertalk' seems a little anti-climactic at this point ...

*ROTFLMAO*

I'd pay good money to watch you try this. Problem is, there's nowhere far enough away for me to stand by and not blow your cover. :D
