By passing X Ray

I thought that ALL personel had to undergo X-Raying of luggage. I saw a pilot by pass the X-Ray and metal detector today at SNA. The pilot was escorted by TSA through the passenger EXIT to a OC Sherrifs Deputy and he then signed some kind of book and was allowed to continue into the terminal without having his bags inspected or going through a metal detector. I suppose he may have been a marshall, but he was in full pilots uniform and I have never heard of them dressing as flight crew. Has anyone else ever seen this behaviour?

Perhaps he's a newly annointed FFDO.

Cool FFDO thank you very much

I have no problem with Pilots (selfish and egocentic creatures that they are) passing through security as they would explode along with the rest of us. Happy festivus! However, does everyone know that the ramp personel (you know the fellas slowly moving bags into the belly) do not go through security, nor are they drug tested. Hum... are airlines waiting for another castastrophy to fix that "minor glitch" in security???

The TSA is a "major glitch" and should be eliminated and replaced with competent, accountable, private security.

FFDOs do not have to go through security. Problem is, at airports where the exit is close to the entry to the checkpoint, this makes it all the more obvious that they're armed (more obvious than the FFDO's gun showing up on the x-ray or setting off the walkthrough, IMHO!)

Actually, this I don't mind... are FFDO identities supposed to be as secret as FAMs? I'd think it would be better if a potential troublemaker saw that their flight crew was armed to make them think twice about trying to enter a secured area with a VERY narrow kill zone.

Agreed.

Actually, it's incredibly stupid for the TSA to permit only the armed flight crews to avoid security - that points out to potential terrorists exactly which crews are NOT armed.

If armed flight crews can bypass the checkpoint, then unarmed crews should also bypass the checkpoint.

But "incredibly stupid" describes quite a bit of the TSA mindset, so I shouldn't be surprised.

A retired-pilot friend of mine has always thought the whole "pilot going through security" thing was a bit nuts. His words... what does it matter what I'm carrying? If I want to cause a problem, I've got my two hands on the stick that can cause the ultimate disaster.

Question: Is there anything differentiating crew who are working a flight vs. those who are just deadheading?

IMHO the FAMS should be in some sort of uniform, and their weapons clearly visible, and there should be one on every flight. Just eliminate a FA to make space for a FAM.

With upwards of 30,000 flights a day in the USA, that would require hiring maybe 10-20 times as many sky marshals. How many tens of billions of dollars would that waste each year?

One per flight? No thanks. Many police patrol in pairs - for very good reasons. IMO, Sky Marshals should always be paired up for the same reasons.

It would be cheaper to require everyone on the plane to be armed with a knife.

Susie, that is but one of the "chinks in the armor" of TSA-provided "security." I think most of the posters and lurkers on this board can name a couple of dozen others, as can any junior al Qaeda wannabe.

OK, so that's two FAMs per flight, replacing two FAs. They would need to do safety briefings, serve drinks and snacks, etc. In that case, they should be put on the airline's payroll, and would save millions of federal dollars. hondsps, you are a genius!!
