www.onebag.com has been suggesting people carry these for a while now. This has become much more relevant given the lunacy surrounding liquids that exist. Anyone know if the solid shampoos and other items will pass through a TSA checkpoint?

You mean soap? My guess is that they have "shampoo" on a list somewhere. It could be a block of titanium, but if it has the word "shampoo" on it, it's going in the trash can.

I guess I'll have to label all my toiletries "baby formula" from now on..

My Lush solid shampoo bar just made it through KOA security just fine. (At least the initial screening, haven't gone through gateside yet. And, I wasn't selected for secondary.) I can't see how they would honestly tell the difference in xray between a tin of gel and a tin with my shampoo bar in it. Especially if you introduced some bubbles into the gel to make it look a bit 'rough' like the bar.

Burt's Bees makes a shampoo bar which is absolutely not a liquid. Works fairly well and smells nice. We are going to need nice smells with no deodorants!

Target is now selling solid perfumes!

So glad to hear another Lushie made it safe through the TSA screening. I'm going to a wedding in September and hotel shampoo is a definite no!

My wife loves Lush since we found it in Toronto a few years ago.

They also make solid body butter which can replace lotion. So, if you think of the necessary toiletries, it looks like most of them can be had in solid form, no?
body soap - obvious
toothpaste - tooth powder, several options including home made
shampoo - Lush, Burt's Bees
conditioner - Lush
body lotion - Lush
deodorant - everywhere
perfume - Target(?)
shaving - shaving bar (folica, Art of Shaving or Truefitt & Hill)

Looks like that covers the major items. Contacts lens stuff is going to be iffy. Questions about whether saline is allowed or not vs. what's actually happening at the checkpoints.

I've really gotten used to shaving oil and I'm a bit annoyed it's "illegal". I may just have to pocket it since that really is a specialty item for the most part. I think I will order some stuff from Lush. The solid shampoo sounds better anyway than liquid shampoo. How long does a bar last?

My sincere thanks for the various tooth powder recipes. I've been using baking soda for a few days to try it out, but will add some sea salt.

I have 3' tresses and my LUSH shampoo bar lasts a couple of months. (around 50 to 60 showers, sometimes more, less for the shampoo and conditioner bars and for the solid conditioner) It lasts longer if I let it dry a bit and then close the tin (LUSH usually will give you one for free if you buy two of the round shampoo and or conditioner bars). Also, setting it a little out of the shower helps too, as when other people shower it tends to melt if the container is open. The soaps work similarly, and I usually use Altoids tins for those after I cut off a piece that will fit.

The first recipe for toothpaste on that page uses glycerine!

My Burt's Bee "solid" shampoo and shaving bar make it through security every week. I've never had a problem.

They say you can get 80 washes per bar; but not sure how that compares to the # of washes in the others. Lots of varieties for different types of hair, various scents.

Solid shampoo lasts longer if you let it dry after washing and keep it in a closed container.

0-2 = low hazard; 3-6 = moderate hazard; 7-10 = high hazard
