OSL "Security Chaos"

Security measure leads to airport chaos

Oslo's Gardermoen International Airport (OSL) was paralyzed with queues of passengers delayed by a new security measure.

From May 1 all portable computers must be removed from carry-on luggage and sent through X-ray machines, and from all appearances Gardermoen was not quite ready for the change, newspaper VG reports on its web site.

"This causes major problems before weekends when there is a lot of traffic. I traveled last Thursday myself, and it was completely hopeless. It also applies to Fridays," OSL information chief Jo Kobro told VG Nett.

"Gardermoen had postponed the practice of individual screening of portable computers until it became a global regulation this month. The airport had hoped to be able to implement more queuing capacity, but so far have only expanded by one line, which has not been enough."

Global regulation? ...? Is the whole planet now stupid?

Global Regulation?

I can only assume that some dimwit at TSA convinced someone at the State Department to declare foreign airports "unsafe" (much like the long-existing warnings about particular airports) unless they changed their screening procedures. Either that or foreign airplanes wouldn't be allowed to land in the USA unless the originating airports required laptops to be removed from bags.

I agree with Spiff: Has the entire globe caught our nation's collective stuipidity?

The "security" infection is spreading. More so than hysteria about bird flu. Perhaps a story about how airport security could spread disease -- a possibility most certainly -- is overdue?

People get their laptops handled in bins or swabbed; people eat sandwhich while working on same laptop. Disease spreads. A couple thousand die. After all, more routine communicable diseases, including flu, kills many more than that worldwide each year. Some part of that being airport-related?

Security lines at OSL are much improved (i.e., shorter) as of late, but OSL had their version of the shoe carnival at first crack of airport opening this morning. Most people walking through the security checkpoint right after the security checkpoint opened were "alarming" and old Norwegian ladies, men and most others were asked to take their shoes off when going through. Rather ridiculous that shoes that rarely alarm elsewhere were alarming there. Either the nonsense has infected OSL -- and laptops out is definitely the case there too -- or someone has to recalibrate the WTMD with more common sense in mind.

Perhaps governments pressuring bodies such as (or members of) ICAO, IATA (or others???) to require this?
