Sounds reasonable, and as I said, I think it's a good approach for anything that may be questionable.

Now if only we could apply Bart's sense of reason to all TSA staff and procedures...

This is actually what I was considering if I don't mail it beforehand, and I also liked both eyecue and Bart's suggestions... although I doubt I will travel with any checked luggage on that trip; my outbound is a day early (in case I run into flight issues) and set up as a mileage run with 5 segments... good way to get a checked bag lost As I want to stand by on the return halfway through at a different airport (JFK vs. LGA) halfway back, I also don't want to have checked bags there.
