Question

Mrs. Xyzzy wants to bring some on a trip later this week, but they are metal and 12" long. Based on the absurdly ambiguous rules the has regarding this I'd assume (as suggested far above) that metal ones will be confiscated.

Does anyone have any recent experiences with knitting needles?

No experience with metal, sorry. Personally, I wouln't chance it, though. Perhaps she can get a backup bamboo set in case she loses the metal ones, and return them if not needed?

I am so glad to see this topped, because I have about 12 hours of flying coming up next week on various flights and would love to be able to finish my project. Of course, since I'm about 1/3 of the way done, I would be devastated if my needles got confiscated, so I have been leaning away from bringing the project.

If Mrs. Xyzzy isn't in the middle of the particular project, and can live with parting with her needles, it may be worth a shot. I've heard from other knitters anecdotally that the smaller circular needles made out of plastic seem to provoke less scrutiny, so that may be worth a try...

Warning wooden ones will be taken away on some airlines like Qantas and New Zealand.

On my flight from MEL-AKL-LAX, a woman was knitting the entire time. Not really sure what needles she was using though. I didn't find Aussie security as fed up. Getting them out of LAX may be trickier...

It was the flight attendant that wanted to take them away--not security.
