Is it legal for a US citizen to put US passport inside an EU nation passport cover?

Anyways I have to frequently take it out of the cover since the Global Entry machines don't work with the cover on, but I've never needed to take it out for any country except Japan. To be fair, I can see it did help slightly in terms that my passport edges are in better shape than my older passports in the same time frame.
The cover really comes in handy when you deal with those travel agencies that like sticking random crap on your passport. I can use a solvent without worrying about damaging my passport cover whereas I did <deleted> up my old passport using goo gone and I ended up applying a sticker of my own to the passport to cover up said damage.
So I take back what I said. They are quite useful if you got the right ones. I still stand by my statements that plastic covers for Rimowa suitcases are hideous and useless.
