Scrambled Jet
Hi Flyertalk, On a recent YYZ - FRA flight at the end of Nov. on Lufthansa I opened the blind and looked out the window to see a fighter jet off our left wing. It was early, about 6am and we were approximately over Wales. It was also dark so I couldn't make out what kind of aircraft it was, but it was extremely close, flew alongside for a while and then moved past us. Most people were asleep, but the passenger directly behind me also witnessed this. Anyway, there were no announcements during or after the flight. How common is such a thing, I've certainly never seen it before, and what might have caused such an interception?

It's not uncommon, a loss of communications (radio silence) from the airliner is the usual cause and once contact is re-established the fighter disengages.

You will probably receive more replies if you asked the question "A fighter jet flew alongside my plane. How much compensation am I entitled to?'
