Help! Lost Passport
I am set to travel on Saturday, March 10 to Japan. I noticed today that my passport is not in its usual place. We've turned the house upside down but to no avail. I scheduled an appointment in Dallas, TX (8 hours away) for a new passport, but I am beyond stressed - how soon will my passport be issued? Can they do it on the spot so that I can drive home happy and secured? Or will they fed-ex it, where NOBODY is home to collect the package?
Also, do I have to have the passport form filled out already or do I do it there?
Houston had an appointment for March 9, 2012 at 10am but that's cutting it SO CLOSE. Please, someone help me with information. I'm sleepless.
I'm sure it is simply lost and not stolen, as I do not remove it from my dresser often. Do I still need to contact police or what?

Many years ago, I was in a similar situation and needed mine rushed and remember being able to pick mine up same day. This was in San Francisco. Hopefully, things haven't changed. Good luck, I'm sure it will be okay.
Have you tried calling to see what the expectations would be?

I had a similar incident last year. Couldn't get a quick appointment, but the procedure in LA is that you can queue up BEFORE the building opens, you get a number as a walk-up, and I was able to hand in my paperwork in about 90 minutes. The building had security like a courthouse, so don't bring a pocketknife even. Getting there an hour before the building opens would not be out of line. Was attempting to fly in 48 hours, so they said to come back at 3PM. There was ANOTHER queue at the pick-up window, but it was outside security. Surcharge for same-day processing, but it's possible. I think over a hundred people were doing the same process as I was. They have a separate line inside the office for appointment people versus walk-ups, but there's signage and staff to make sure you're in the right queue.
Bring all paperwork filled out. Bring proof of flying right away. Bring photos, birth certificate - all the published required documents. Find the PDFs of forms to fill out on their web site. It was surprisingly efficient, accommodating, and they do it hundreds of times a day, so they have the process down pat. They just don't publish the entire process for walk-ups.

Hi all,
I have an appointment in Dallas, TX tomorrow instead. It is much further, 8 hours away from my home. I will have to miss my full time/part time job and make arrangements but it is necessary. I will leave today in the afternoon so I can arrive by night time.
My appointment is at 11:30am. Should I have all my documents filled out then and there?
Also, will I be able to get a new passport that same day? I'd really like to just have peace of mind since I've been sleepless at night.

What do you mean as long as nothing comes up?
Also, what is the cost?
BTW, a small discrepency in my license name - they omitted one of the names of my first name and added part of my first and middle name >_< I hope it doesn't delay the process.
What's the cost for everything?

Have you even visited the web site or Googled for "passport fees?"

You are advised to download, print, and fill out ALL docs ahead of time to avoid surprises, and as I said, bring the required pictures and proof of imminent travel. And the payment method of your choice that's listed on the web site whose URL is above.
Especially don't forget:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/for.../ds11_842.html
http://travel.state.gov/passport/for.../ds64_845.html
And read:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/get...first_830.html
about bringing PHOTOCOPIES as well as the original documents you will need to prove citizenship, as if you're a first-timer. Did you ever make and keep a photocopy of your lost passport? I recommend everybody do this to make the process a bit easier next time.

I kept copies for many years, but I shredded them only last month due to this paranoia that the house keeper or other visitors might find them. My fault.
I found a piece of the torn up passport - has my picture and the passport number.
Now I'm just worried that my license will cause some issues, but we'll see how it goes. I hope I can get it that very same day.

My mom ran into this when she went to get her passport.
Her original first name on her birth cert was different from the one on her licence (which was what she was using all her life).
Fortunately she had a document showing the first name change from original to current, so she sent for a certified copy of that to send in with everything else.
But you may need to get the correction done on the licence....
hope it went OK today
