Why the patdown??

We flew through LAX Monday night. Some stuff in my wife's carry-on drew an ETD swab (not exactly unexpected, that didn't bother me.)

Why in the world did she get a patdown, though??? (Not the full opt-out grope, though.)

Cause they can ... or really out of an abundance of caution.

Are you saying the ETD swab was a false positive? This happened to my husband once. His C-PAP alarmed the swab (glycerin from the soap used to clean it, duh) and they did a quick frisk down his sides and legs. It was a few years ago, but I agree, I couldn't see any rational reason for it. If he had some kind of glycerin bomb (?), he could have had it stashed in a number of places the clerk didn't touch.

I do not know what the machine said, although they appeared to be using two machines. (There were two packages they swabbed, though, so that could simply have been to speed things up.)

I don't think they had any results back when they started the patdown.

They certainly presented it as the patdown was required because they had to swab the stuff.

Need more info to better answer your question: what "stuff" was swabbed?

Irrelevant--she was told about the patdown before they had looked at the bags. All they had at that time was a mass on x-ray.
