RE: Is a UPS a restricted item?

Hello,

I have a potential trip coming up where I will need to carry a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) with me. As these devices contain sealed lead acid batteries (that are leakproof), are these allowed to be carried in checked luggage?

Any help is much appreciated.

Kind regards

Lee

Yup, I've checked a small UPS for a trade show awhile back and had no issues with TSA. I recall my package having a "inspected" tag, but not sure if that was due to the other electronics I had in there or if it was the UPS.

If you want to be extra careful, put a label on the UPS in your checked luggage noting that it contains a "nonspillable" battery (use that word) in case it is opened for inspection.

When carrying such a battery in carry on luggage, I have had a TSA x-ray operator get all testy and ask me if the battery contained "liquid." He clearly was hoping to have found a Big Catch (TM) and an excuse to confiscate my battery. My answer repeatedly used the terms nonspillable, absorbed-glass-mat (AGM), and no liquid, and he quit bugging me.

And if you were a bad guy, wouldn't you have answered very convincingly the identical way?

And then you could have waltzed onto the plane and tried to take it over with your few ounces of acid.

Why do they even bother to discuss an item with the passenger if the bad guys would only lie, and the good guys would say the same thing?

Any bad guy who can make a bottle of water, or a tube of toothpaste explode is someone way outside my league, let alone a TSA tub stacker.
