Suddenly, I get a CLEAR solicitation

Apologies for not putting this in an already existing CLEAR thread, but of course in the recent FT tradition, the search function won't find one for me.

Here's the email I got today:

Dear Subscriber,

To celebrate Father's Day, I'm thrilled to offer you a free family plan upgrade a $50 value when you join CLEAR. Now your whole family can experience hassle-free travel for just $179. With the busy summer travel season approaching, membership in CLEAR is an increasingly valuable time-saver. We are now open in Orlando and Denver, with additional cities to be announced soon.

* Join at enroll.clearme.com
* After you enroll, your spouse or partner can join at enroll.clearme.com. Just have them enter your family code (displayed on Your Account page) in the promo code box of the payment section and we'll waive the $50 fee
* Children under 18 can always come through the CLEARlane free when accompanied by a memberno enrollment necessary

This very special offer ends on Father's Day, June 19th. Why wait?

Best,
Caryn Seidman-Becker
CEO CLEAR

P.S. Join CLEAR now and receive 5 free guest passes for your friends and co-workers. Each pass entitles them to a free three month trial of CLEAR.
I was one of those who got the old CLEAR card through the Hyatt promotion and have never paid for it. Paying $179 for it now, when I haven't seen CLEAR in an airport (including SFO, my home airport) for years seems like a total waste of money. What airports are these folks in, if any? How long before they go bankrupt this time?

Also, what do you get for that $175 at the two airport that they 'service'?

CLEAR has a chicken-egg problem. They won't get anyone to pay for it until they're in the nation's top 30 airports, at least, and they won't be able to achieve that coverage until they get a bunch of people paying for it.

CLEAR also has a privacy problem. While some are willing to pay for a line jumping service, many also find it not worth the price or invasion of privacy simply to jump ahead of the line.

Let's be realistic - line jumping is all it is. Once you get to TSA, you still get the same harassment everyone else does.

It'd probably do better as just a fee based service rather than biometrics and fees.

They're only at two airports? How useless!

If it's like the old CLEAR it is truly only a line jumping service, as noted above.

Just one of the other down points on Clear right now, it is not recognized as a viable ID at any checkpoint that does not have Clear lanes at this time. That may change tomorrow, but currently it is not considered a valid ID outside of the Clear lane areas.

Me too! I got the postcard today. I have no idea how they got my new address, though, because I have moved twice since June 2009 when CLEAR went bust.

I had no idea CLEAR had even re-opened in MCO and DEN. I don't go to MCO much (if ever) and rarely clear security at DEN (connection only). But I do have almost 2 years left on my defunct CLEAR membership, so I guess i will reactivate.

Bummer that I shredded my CLEAR card (and discarded its remains in four different cities during the course of a trip)...because now I will have to pay $7 to order a new one.

Also, I am somewhat creeped out by the fact that I don't have to resubmit my biometrics to reactivate my membership. Because that means CLEAR kept everyone's personal and biometric data (should have destroyed it IMO), and then literally sold it to the highest bidder during the bankruptcy liquidation!
