Lost your travel documents? How to avoid being grounded

USA Today article:

"The Transportation Security Administration requires valid government-issued identification, but "not having ID does not necessarily mean a passenger won't be allowed to fly," TSA spokesman Greg Soule says. TSA officials can verify the identities of passengers who provide additional information through other methods such as public databases, he says. "Showing other types of ID may be useful," Soule says"

Indeed a friend of mine flew four times without "official" ID, just things like birth certificate and employer ID (from a small company). It took maybe 20 extra seconds at TDC each time and no secondary.

I used to present my press badge when c/p ID was first required then switched to my passport for the sake of expediency. Suppose I could just as easily switch back.

But, you can also hit the jackpot, be pulled aside, and spend 45 mins. while various databases are verified and every piece of carry-on is rummaged.

Not if you have any form of ID with your name on it. In that case, there is no database verification.

If you have to check bags the airline may give you more trouble than TSA. I posted about this it was moved to dl forum. Having someone you know vouch for you will speed it up somewhat.
