With the reduced screening and Pissy telling us that holidays are ripe for terrorist attacks, where are all the terrorists and planes falling out of the sky.
To the observant and thinkers, it would tell us the fear is unfounded. Less security + holiday = terrorist attack. NOT !!!!!! So we obviously can be safe without all this nonsense, but I doubt any news organization will put 2 + 2 together. |

TSA's really in a no-win situation today.
They've chosen to back off and let things run really smoothly - which I think was their best choice - assuming there were a bunch of travelers. But since the travelers didn't show up - letting things run smoothly is a disaster for them - it highlights the fact that nobody is flying. Now if they had taken the "hard azz" approach and backed everybody up, then the public might be angry with the opt outs, but the publicity would destroy them in the long run. Lose lose for TSA. The writing is really on the wall now. They better go to plan B. |

I'm starting to sense more and more backlash over the Opt Out protest. One local talkshow host referred to protestors as "jerks" because they are, in effect, delaying or even making others miss flights and F up their reunion plans for Thanksgiving.

WOW TSA did not back off today it was business as usual. There was 03% opt out at DEN A checkpoint. I would call that an epic failure on the opt out plan. There is a spin being put on the opt out failure in an attempt to make it look like TSA is at fault for the failure of the opt out movement to be successful. I cant believe it, no wait yes I can.

Flew today - PIT-MKE. One of the best and nicest flying days in forever (I usually fly once a week). I think it was due to the national attention, media, and all of political attention lately. Keeping up the pressue on the TSA (getting rid of some of their leadership who are obviously clueless), will show changes.
Today was a dream of a travel day. I didn't have to opt out today (as I do many other days) because there weren't backscatter machines around. The TSA agents were friendly and nice. Truly a welcome change. I swear my blood pressure didn't go up at all! I like that there is all of this focused attention on the TSA - I hope it will continue until major changes are made! |
I haven't seen a single report of delay anywhere. Nor would I call anyone a jerk for avoiding ionizing radiation.

Eyecue - exactly how many of those scanners at your airport were in full operation today? Reports I've seen posted on here state that they were not operating the majority of the machines, as they normally would have during an ordinary run of the mill Wednesday.

You are certainly welcome to your view. You can call people who disagree with you whatever you want, it doesn't make your argument any more valid.
Opt-Outs may have some very serious issues with the backscatter radiation, as well as legitimate privacy issues. There is a post from someone claiming to work on the machines who says they are not safe. Good luck if you work around them, perhaps in 20 years you will be part of a class action settlement. It seems from the reports in other threads that TSA is on its best behavior today. Maybe it should be extended to every day. |

Being jerks? Because of NOOD, I had pretty much my shortest security delay EVER. Everyone who participated is a HERO.

At LAX, it was mostly metal detectors (or entirely metal detectors today). I can't seem to keep straight whether ATL used them or not.
But at LAX, lines were way, way less - and people heading out of town by car had to be at record highs. 101 northbound was gridlocked by 11 a.m. or so almost to Sta Barbara, with a few spots moving a bit faster. I'm a teacher, and most of the people I know are teachers, and it's very clear that students were in class today as compared to previous years, rather than flying to see family. Usually the parking lot is practically deserted, instead everyone showed up. Two years ago, half of my students planned a flight on day before Thanksgiving, this year only 1 or 2 raised their hands (out of about 100). The economy is bad, they say, and it's too much hassle. Number of flights going out is lower than 2 years ago (according to someone I know who works for a major airline), and there were still seats empty in the early morning flights - indeed, many destinations out of LAX still have last minute seats, I'm getting last minute fare alerts galore (if I wanted to fly to Chicago or Orlando, I could go very cheaply, for sure). This can't be good for the airlines, although hopefully their respective corporate owners have diversified so that air travel is a loss leader (perhaps investing in high tech security scanners, soon to be installed everywhere). I wonder how many low dose x-rays people will tolerate (would it cut down on shoppers at the mall, too? that would be cool!) Everyone just stay home! A giant prison of self-bought houses and self-rented apartments! A kind of giant labor camp (although one wonders what percentage of the population is fully employed...and at above $10 an hour...) |

That is going to leave a mark. But, whatever, NBC News just reported it's many airports---the breeze going though TSA security today. Could it be TSA scaling back: I don't know. Just trying to be objective... |

I wasn't alive when the Thalidomide thing happened, but I still know about it. (AMOF, as a citizen I feel like it's my business to know about it.) Don't people read?

Keep it up, people. I'm a quiet type, but I'm thinking about taking my attorney to the airport to watch my stuff because they've pulled me out of line because my titatinum implant from an old modern dance injury (yes, it was an extreme rehearsal of an extreme number) sets off the WTMD, as I'm opting out of the Radiation Rapiscan -- oh so well named -- as the offspring of two cancer survivors. |
I think those talk radio people are the jerks. They have the track record. No self control, big mouths. Anyone who bases his opinion of any population group on some radio "personality" should have his head examined. Howard Stern? Don Imus? Rush Limbaugh? Sean Hannity? Is that the kind of people you want to identify with? Really? Meditate a little if your answer is yes because I'm pretty sure you have a problem if you admire that population demographic.
