Safety of MMW?

Hi all- First post here. I am a reluctant semi-frequent traveler (for work) just returning from maternity leave... Have a flight tomorrow and really not looking forward to it!

I am against both devices for privacy reasons, but am trying to understand the safety implications of the MMW. I know I am uncomfortable with the radiation from the backscatter one, but am trying to understand if there are also specific health concerns with the MMW.

There are no radiation concerns with the MMW. Which, quite frankly, compounds the stupidity of the TSA's decision to use Backscatter instead.

Improperly calibrated MMW devices can cause burns. As with the backscatter Nude-O-Scopes, no peer-reviewed studies have been done to validate government claims they are safe.

EDIT: And welcome to FlyerTalk, smitks00!

This site is a bit inflammatory in it's reporting but it does link to a variety of articles and one study that raises concern about terahertz wave exposure. The basic message is there is enough doubt and concern that should make us cautious, yet that concern is set aside in the name of security.

First of all welcome to FlyerTalk smitks00 and thanks for your help OakParkFlyer (assume Chicago and lived there years ago!).

Here's another reference for the health concerns for the backscatter which links to several academic studies, etc. Both of these will certainly give you a well-balanced read of the health concerns.

Thanks for your support of FlyerTalk.
