I agree that the disproportionate funneling of women through the whole-body scanner likely happens for multiple reasons, including the "hottie" effect and the assumption that we're compliant. I also wonder if there's a buddy system involved in which male TSOs are helping other male TSOs avoid having to do pat-downs on men.
It would be interesting to see if men are more likely to funnel women to the scanner. If you're a man and you send a woman to the scanner and there's a problem or she opts out, your female colleague will have to deal with it, not you or any of your male buddies. I (no longer a hottie) was pulled from the WTMD to the NOS line by a man, and when I opted out all he had to do was call for a female TSO. Not his problem. These employees are going to have a problem with "I'll just stay on the line that I'm in, thanks?" And what gives him the right to put his hands on you in the first place? /another feisty female |

I assumed that once I was told to go through the scanner, I couldn't go back to the WTMD, and that assumption seems to have been confirmed by anecdotal reports of people unsuccessfully trying to do that. I saw my options as scan or grope, although as we've now learned, I apparently had the third option of being threatened with a $11k fine. |
