Why on earth would TSA be checking ID (again) at the gate?

I was sitting across the way from a departing DL flight today in Rochester, NY when the GA announced that the TSA would be checking the ID of all boarding passengers. Two overweight, elderly smurfs (so not the crack A-team!) proceeded to check IDs.

Can anyone give logical explanation for this or was it juts random layers of screening(TM) or workfare job creation?

I was waiting for them to try it on my Eagle flight to ORD but they shuffled off after the gate had closed, having failed to find anything of any substance. There were no immigration agents on hand, before someone mentions some kind of immigration sweep.

No, that sounds like the crack (a) team. @:-)

No, you've nailed it. Keeping Workfare employees looking busy harassing passengers makes it less likely that the crack team will be back on the street where they belong.

Because they have too many empolyees and too much money. They'd rather waste the money on harrassing everyone they see then doing something useful.

My wife got checked twice at Schihpol. I haven't seen the layout, but she swears she didn't get "on the outside".

It's a US requirement that when flying to the US you have to be checked at the gate just in case Osama Bin Laden has swapped boarding passes with George W Bush

They were doing gate-side pat downs at LGA yesterday too. At least they didn't have the WBIs and sexual assaults at the US terminal, because I'm not sure I can stay out of jail if I have to be sexually assaulted twice per flight.

It is possible to print one boarding pass for the documents check, and another to board the plane. It would be a way to get around airline transferability rules. One can question how much ID checks have to do with security, but it's airline revenue protection.

if you're talking about the same bp for the same flight, sure there is and i do it all the time-just check-in on-line and then re-print your bp from one for the check-in machines

Any airline revenue protection should be strictly up to the airlines. The government should stay the hell out of it.

It's getting close to 9/11's anniversary, again and not surprised at all that Homeland Security is ramping up its random screening.

For the past week, I've noticed also extra security & checkpoints setup for random or targeted stops at major bridges & tunnels here in NYC. Specialized local police teams were deployed along Canal Street, watching traffic closely as it's a major transit point for LGA, EWR and JFK.

What's happening at the airport departure gates is mirroring other measures going into effect on surface transportation. We'll be oversea visiting 3 different countries next month and know for sure that we will dealing with extra bag checks at one of the airport hub.

Welcome to FlyerTalk!

You can make a difference by filing complaints about this nonsense - 9/11 anniversary is no excuse for increasing the disgusting, unnecessary harassment disease that is spreading out of our nation's airports.

Have to admit that I am not looking forward to my NRT-DTW-BWI journey on 11SEP...
