LAX Cops Accused of Lax Security

Aug 18, 2010

Passengers at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) claim they’ve seen police officers working on laptops, reading newspapers, even doing a crossword puzzle while on the job, according to a published report.

A four-month investigation by KNX 1070 revealed the complaints levied against the armed law enforcement agents who are monitoring security checkpoints for travelers in LAX.

The report posted online includes a memo from then-Los Angeles Assistant Police Chief Frank Febraga informing supervisors of some of the reports.

“These complaint are embarrassing to the organization, and erode the professionalism of Airport Police,” the memo states.

Since the airport LEOs seem kinda bored, can somebody tell me why John Pistole wants to have LEO TSA employees? So the Pistole Packin' Screeners can trade comic books with the regular airport cops?

Why not get rid of both? The cops are really there for the TSA's safety, not the passengers'...

Well, after all, they are LAX security. Truth in advertising, at least.

LAX is one of the few airports that doesn't seem to be able to control aggressive panhandlers on airport property. Even JFK rarely has these any more.

Can't the police work on eliminating this?

For example, there's always a guy standing right outside the T1 terminal door with a phony ID badge around his neck asking people if they need any airport information. You'll only fall for this once. After you talk to him and he gives you the information, he'll hit you up for a donation to his phony-baloney charity. (I told him, on the one time I spoke to him not knowing he wasn't an airport employee, that I thought the deception he's doing is unethical.)

A person using this pitch is at this location every time I'm there. He's right in front of the door, you'd have to walk around him to get by.

Then there's usually a woman dressed as a nun with a collection jar standing by the security check line. She holds her jar over the rope, in the path of people on the security check line.

If LAX police can't figure out a way to get rid of these people, how will they stop a terrorist?

(Even if it is "public property", they can at least tell them to stand out of the way of doors, queues, and walkways, and not block them.)

I'd rather have them sitting around than harassing people by searching cars coming into the airport.

L.A. can bar Hare Krishnas from panhandling at airports, court rules

The California Supreme Court rules bans on solicitations do not violate state constitutional guarantees of free speech. The ruling covers all cities and counties in the state.
---
Los Angeles and other California cities and counties may bar the Hare Krishnas and other groups from panhandling at airports, the California Supreme Court unanimously ruled Thursday.

The state high court, reviving a 1997 Los Angeles ordinance aimed at LAX, ruled that bans on soliciting at airports do not violate state constitutional guarantees of free speech. Lawyers for Los Angeles said that about 100 individuals representing at least 15 groups solicit money regularly at LAX.

Thursday's ruling is expected to lead other airports to consider ordinances similar to L.A.'s law, which would ban solicitations in the interior terminals, parking lots and adjacent sidewalks.

Airports in San Francisco, Oakland and San Diego and California city and county associations sided with Los Angeles in the case. The ACLU sided with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness of California, which challenged the Los Angeles law and won an injunction against its enforcement in federal trial court.....

As bad as Pissy Pistole might turn out, be thankful for small miracles. Erroll Southers, the previous nominee for TSA Dear Leader, is assistant chief of the Los Angeles World Airports Police Department. Imagine Southers evolving the whole TSA using the LAXPD Model.

how could that be bad? All the TSO would move to sitting around doing crosswords and sleeping - none of this charade they currently undertake...

They're already sleeping, so I guess they're halfway there...
