You can check a zillion things you can not carry on, knives, guns, liquids, etc. As mentioned, it's no longer a sterile area once the checked bags arrive.

Which doesn't matter if the bags are checked through to the final destination, and the passenger doesn't come in contact with them during a transit. @:-)

We just flew back from AUA on Saturday. We cleared AUA security go down a hall and clear USA security. Its hilarious.

Right, but you have to be with your bags to clear customs so they can steal all your salami and cheese and hassle you over your stuff (though personally I've never had that happen so I'm pretty lucky).
