No idea, but they look for it perhaps 30% of the time (EU country residence visa)... and 75% when it was a UAE residence visa.

I'm not sure that they are looking for it specifically, but they quite often look at every page (72 of them) in my passport. Syria, Yemen and Sudan seem to draw the most questions.

I used my foreign address(es) which have been pretty stable for the past several years. But I could have used a US address instead had I known. I will be extremely angry if they are willing to take my $100 for a GE application and then ding me for not meeting a non-publicized rule or regulation.
Just wanted to update my own post. I just received for Global Entry Conditional Approval and authorization to schedule my interview. Time elapsed for processing my application was about 2 weeks and I have no previous applications nor NEXUS/SENTRI approvals. My address is in China, and my list of foreign countries visited is primarily in Asia and Europe, (which is admittedly less interesting than Desert Nomad's list!). So apparently the information D.N. received on required 3-year US residency isn't strictly correct. To my relief, and possibly others who live outside the USA.
