Do airlines do a background check before boarding?

Hello~!

Couple years ago, I went to Japan.. When I was checking in to get my ticket.
They checked by passport, ID and the booking details, then the customer service rep asked me to hold on and when to the back and talked to a manager... The customer service rep (which was my freind) came back to me and asked me what I did.... It seems like when the typed in my information in their system, I was flagged for some reason.

What can this be?
Does airlines do a background check before boarding??

Please l

Sounds like your name may have matched someone the Watch List or No Fly List and a call was made to clear you.

Have you flown since and had a problem getting a boarding pass?

Welcome to Flyer Talk gocubbiego

Many countries require API (advanced passenger information) from the airlines of every passenger. Some countries will flag some passengers as not being approved to fly and the airline will need to contact a number to get clearance, or boot the passenger off the flight.

Additionally, some airlines have their own checks for certain passengers. Eg where person paying for a booking with a personal credit card is not travelling on the itinerary they may require an indemnification letter or to sight the credit card at check in.
