Proof of Security Theater in DC

Going to DC tomorrow? Might want to avoid Metro during morning rush:

Scores of Metro Transit Police officers with dogs and bomb technicians will swarm one of the system's busiest stations during the morning rush Tuesday in a show of force against a potential terrorist attack,
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...020103592.html

In another article, a spokeshole was quoted as saying "this is to let passengers know we're there".

This will likely make a real mess of an already overcrowded morning rush hour.

It's not like they have much else to do most of the time. I stopped taking Metro because of nonsense like this.

Ah, here's the other quote:

Officials said there is no current threat or elevated threat level in the system but the event is intended to "remind riders ... that Metro remains vigilant against terrorist activity."

Or it's a reminder that they're overfunded.

I liked the one comment that the police would be better deployed to stations where there was higher crime as of late, stating that would be a much more effective use of the police. ^

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

With the Olympics coming to my city in less than two weeks we are sure to see an explosion of security theatre nonsense. Hundreds of 'temporary' cameras and metal detectors installed, and thousands of cops trucked in from elsewhere for a relatively insignificant event.

Security harrassment will be due to displaying logos from non-sponsor companies within the Freedom Zone as opposed to refusing the TSA magic beverage paper test.

I'll start a new thread on this matter and report the foolishness once it gets underway.

"I look for anything out of the ordinary. It could be a bag of garbage -- you just don't know," Officer N. Miller of Silver Spring, one of the anti-terrorism team members, said as he stood on the platform, inspecting trains. "When people see you inspecting, it gives them some comfort knowing we're out here," he said.
Talk about ego masturbation.

About 50 officers, including Metro's anti-terrorism unit, criminal investigators, special response teams and other squads, will move into the station about 7:30 to demonstrate heightened vigilance, Metro officials said. The transit agency won't release the name of the station until early Tuesday and asked the media to refrain from disclosing it until after the exercise begins.
As usual, the media wimped out again. They will have to pick a station where they can get all their stuff in & out easily and one at which the media can easily set up cameras and trucks to get as much of it on film as possible. And, since it's cold out, I'm sure they will pick a station which is inside.

The exercises are funded through a $1.2 million grant from the Department of Homeland Security's Urban Area Security Initiative.
Our tax dollars at work...

I'd politely suggest that a much higher priority for Metro right now would be to figure out how to make the trains run on time without crashing into each other or running over & killing their own workers.

And of course the Kettles (already surrendered) are out:

Some passengers were surprised by the searches, and approached police to ask what was happening. Many told the officers some version of "we're glad that you're here."

"It will make people think twice if they are trying to do something," said computer specialist Robert Rotz, 50, of Shady Grove.

Sounds like an ideal time for a terrorist to attack some other station.
