Metal detector in checked baggage?
My son's favorite hobby is metal detecting. He is headed to the beaches of south Florida and would like to take his metal detector with him. Is there any reason to think it would be a problem to take the metal detector in his checked bags?

I've flown several times in the last 2 years with a specially "packed" suitcase containing multiple laptops, network switches, projector, cables, wireless equipment, etc. so I can't imagine that a metal detector will cause any issues.
I hope your son finds lots of cool stuff!

Depending on what it's made of (say it's wires, battery, metal tubes) they may open the bag to take a look at it for inspection. Make sure there are no batteries with it that are not installed in the detector.

^^If you decide to check the MD, you could always put a small note saying that the device in the checked baggage is a metal detector... Wouldn't want the TSA(Thousands Standing Around) to shut-down the airport..
