Question: Fireproof Document Chest in carry-on
I have a small fire-proof locking document chest that I would like to take in my carry-on. It is small enough to fit in my roll-aboard.
Has anyone had any experience bringing these through security in the US? Also, my destination is the PRC, so would this cause any issues with customs?
I plan to bring the keys with me in case they need it to be opened, but I'm more concerned with the thickness of the chest exterior and if the X-ray can distinguish that there is nothing hidden inside the walls of the chest.
I emailed the TSA contact address several days ago, and still have not received a response.

You will probably be fine, but I would expect they will make you open it. I flew with one once (honestly don't remember if it was before or after 9/11) for work and it was no problem at all getting through security, they just wanted a look see to the inside.

I have a "fire proof box" that is designed to not only keep the "fire" away from the material inside, but also, when heated to a high enough temperature (~350 degrees), weep liquid into the safe, thus providing moisture that will keep the (paper) contents from spontaneous combustion due to high temperatures inside the safe.
If this is actually the case, I'd assume that the walls of the safe contain some sort of gel that holds the liquid until heated... how does the TSA tell the difference between this gel and the <omgimabomber> type of gel? Must I put my fire safe into the 3-1-1 baggie?
