A Washington Post opinion writer takes note of the TSA's latest gaf after noting while traveling that the TSOs have unwrapped checked Christmas presents, taken peanut butter crackers from babies...

I was distraught to open a suitcase – that I had checked! – only to discover that the Christmas presents my mother carefully wrapped had been torn open in a search by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers.

Normally, I would not even think to complain about these events. I understand that a new world exists after 9/11 and that when it comes to ensuring public safety, what’s a little inconvenience?
My equanimity, though, evaporated upon reading today how the TSA posted online a 93-page manual detailing some if its most closely guarded security secrets.
And therein likes the biggest danger. All along we have been told that there is a reason for all these silly things we are asked to do. Trust us, has been the implicit command of the TSA. Not likely.
Nothing more need be said.

Nice to see that the media is starting to wake up. It seems every couple days, there is an anti-TSA article out there.


There are some good comments, but unfortunately there are a couple cool-aid drinkers too.

I routinely send a "best of FT" e-mail to a friend inside DHS, especially when TSA has been, for them, even more egregious than normal.

Not once has he responded with a defense of that sorry excuse for a government agency.

Hard to defend evil, incompetence, dereliction of duty, and behavior bordering on criminal negligence on the part of their senior managers.

Remember: Subjecting average citizens to uncalled for scrutiny does not mean these people are really doing a fine job. It means exactly the opposite. Every resource that is being expended harassing that average citizen is a resource that is NOT being spent finding the real threats. That is the ultimate and frightening irony of the corrupt TSA.

Why should we believe anything that anyone from DHS/TSA says? They've lost nearly all of their credibility.

That's what scares me about this whole organization. It's almost as if the public has reached an unspoken agreement with the agency, saying, "We know you're incompetent. You know you're incompetent. But we have to pretend to be doing something, and if there are no terrorist attacks, we'll pretend it worked. If there is a terrorist attack, we'll address the issue at that time. As long as no one says anything out loud, we'll let it slide."

The TSA sounds increasingly like the mortgage crisis. The banks knew the loans were no good. The debtors knew they couldn't pay back what they borrowed. But as long as the system didn't crash around everyone, the system continued. And look at how that one ended...

That's because they can't defend. I've asked 2 of the spots here that I actually talk to why Starbucks purchased before security is dangerous & Starbucks purchased AFTER security is NOT dangerous. They had no answer & agreed it was just another stupid gvt. rule.
