Odd questions by Customs

I returned from HKG through SFO today.

When I walked the Customs gauntlet after collecting my baggage, they were asking everyone who was leaving several questions; how long were you gone, where did you go, why did you go. Routine. Then the last question was new: How much money are you bringing back from overseas? This is the first time I've been asked this; is this new to everyone else too?

Shouldn't that question be asked when you're LEAVING the US?

No, the $10k limit goes for both entering and leaving the U.S.

Not an "odd" question at all.

Only odd if a TSO asks you that question when you're passing through the checkpoint.

It has happened to me a couple of times during the last 20+ years. My answer is always something like: "I wish I had that much" and the customs officer mostly smiles.

I got that question once when returning from Europe. My (truthful) response: "I've got about twenty dollars in small bills in my wallet, and that's it!" The officer grinned and waved me on.

I told the agent that I was returning to the US with the same amount of cash I left with. Which was the truth!

On one of my entries to the US this year, I was asked by the last CBP employee I came across on that trip if I was importing any diamonds.

I flew into MIA last week, and encountered three surprises.

No lines at immigration.

My luggage out quickly.

The CBP encounter that was a short but thorough mini-interrogation. Eye Contact from the officer, new questions, and definitely not "going through the motions" that is the usual practice.

Now Halls, I've gained much respect for you based on your postings.

But, now I know you are either lying or hallucinogenic!

What you said about Miami is just not possible!!!
