GAO report on the TSA and screening technology
http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d10128.pdf
Some key points:
The TSA has failed to follow an exceptional number of "best practice" guidelines regarding the implementation of new technology. The TSA has consistently failed to conduct risk assessments, cost-benefit analyses, and operational testing regarding multiple checkpoint technologies.
The report highlights "puffer" machines, in particular arguing that the TSA's use of untested puffer equipment may have increased vulnerability.
The GAO findings can be generalized to other TSA procedures. Many of the problems we discuss on this board (gate screening, liquids, shoes, continuous and male-only screening) have been implemented without testing or evaluation.
I don't think that we can look forward to any significant changes, but I'm happy to see official criticism. At least someone beyond FlyerTalk is noticing.
