The article says that AM filed for Chapter 11, that is a US bankruptcy term. I would assume that AM filed in Mexico and that Mexican laws are different.

Your assumptions are (1) incorrect, and (2) correct. AM filed Chapter 11 in the USA. Mexican laws are different.

Note that LATAM also chose the USA to file a Bankruptcy (also Ch. 11).
