SAA Upgrades?

SAA Upgrades?
Taking my first trip to South Africa in March via SAA out of Atlanta. All my miles and privileges are on United (though I'm no longer 1K).
Looking for best strategy for an upgrade (from econ to business). I have AMEX membership miles that I could transfer into the SAA program, but if I don't get upgraded, then I've wasted the miles in a program that I probably won't use.I think Delta is a partner, but I'm not sure I can use Delta miles to upgrade the SAA flight....
Any ideas? Anybody have strategies for an upgrade with these guys?
