Aircraft swapped at the last minute?!
It's beyond suspect that it consistently flew 738's but this day it was swapped for the A320 at the last minute.

If I'm tracking back correctly, this was a swap that happened prior to the incoming Cairo/Paris flight (803) and the swap occurred a day before that flight. So, I wouldn't call it "last minute."
Flightradar24 shows that it has been a combination of A320s and A321s along with an A332 on 5/12 so nothing particularly suspect there - I think just inaccuracy on the part of FlightAware. See link: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/ms804 |
EgyptAir to re-number MS803/804 to MS801/802, effective today (19MAY16)

While every airline disaster is a tragedy, this is the first to be personal. A very close colleague of mine lost 4 members of his family in this crash.
May all our prayers be with them. |

I find it interesting that the last communication from the pilot reported that he was jovial/jocund is thanking the Greek air traffic controllers. Yet SOP was for one more communication as the flight was handed off to the Egyptian air traffic controllers, and the pilots would surely have known that. To me, it would have been more natural to do the effusive thank you at the time of the handoff, not before. It strikes me as strange.
He spoke to them in Greek, which suggests that he was probably of Greek nationality, as I suspect that few people without ties to Greece are fluent in modern Greek. AFAIK the nationalities of the crew members haven't been released, nor do we know anything about the backgrounds/training/experience of the pilots beyond their hours (and, for the captain, the number of those hours that were in the A320). BTW, the news media have found a guy who was supposed to be on this flight but changed his ticket. He's speaking English (but with an accent) about how lucky he feels. |
