Let's reposition this over in TravelNews so those not OMNI-enabled can follow the discussion.

One (unconfirmed) tweet says pilot wanted asylum.

First mainstream media report I've seen:

http://www.news.com.au/world/reports...-1226829564322

Try other Australian sources too; it's mid-day there so probably quickest to pick up and get info out at this point.

Yes, pretty riveting. It's all over Reddit with some useful on-the-fly transcriptions of radio traffic. GVA said closed until at least 0700 local.

Aircraft apparently suffered engine flameout on final and landed with minutes of fuel remaining. Cockpit crew said to have evacuated via cockpit window.

Asylum demands said to have been issued but cannot tell who's in control of the aircraft.

Mainstream media (CNN, BBC) still silent on this, if they know about it.

I'm watching UA148 (EWR-GVA). It has already done one loop--at first it looked like it was going back up to CDG, but I think it's gonna maybe wait out the airport re-opening and not have to divert

And now that there is a thread in the appropriate airline forum
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/other...erted-gva.html
I will send this to that forum (and ask the Senior Mods to merge) while leaving a permanent re-direct in Travel News for folks to come to the story from that venue.

Optimistic timetable for resolution, even with Swiss efficiency.

Fascinating.

Twitter and flight trackers provide more information at a faster rate than conventional media outlets these days.

Nothing new there, MSM has been a dinosaur for a long time now, with a couple of notable exceptions.

I think UA148 (correctly) predicted the 0700 re-opening was a little optimistic, and appears to have pulled the trigger to head over to FCO or MXP (looks like it's more on track for FCO)

Cockpit windows as escape hatches, never occurred to me that would come in handy during a hijacking, but glad to hear they did!
