Where in Europe? Will you have to check any bags, or can you travel carry-on only? Starting from what part of the USA?

But many airlines these days offer Basic Economy or "Light" fares that might be similarly priced to what the "budget" airlines are offering. It really depends on what level of amenities the traveler wants.

If the OP is still AAdvantage EXP -- as indicated in his FT profile -- he might find an AA Basic Economy fare on flights operated by AA itself to be very good value, after applying his elite benefits to such a fare.

Edited to add: dkeng beat me to the punch about Norse Atlantic.

I'm seeing $300 roundtrip fares from the US east coast to Europe this winter/spring. I have yet to see any "regular" airlines (i.e. not ULCC like Play) offer fares that low. But I guess we can always hope the "big boys" price match.

The EU3 & US3 cartels are matching fares offered by Norse, so take a look at the route map of Norse to find decent offers.

pick different cities and you'll find a mainline airline with a decent fare. Try flying into BCN (tends to have low rates).

Yeah, maybe. But then it doesn't only not include a checked bag, it also doesn't include a cabin bag (!), seating or on-board refreshments...

By the time you include the basic things to make it parity with a traditional carrier (cabin bag, basic seating, some food) you end up just as expensive if not more.
