But many airlines these days offer Basic Economy or "Light" fares that might be similarly priced to what the "budget" airlines are offering. It really depends on what level of amenities the traveler wants.
If the OP is still AAdvantage EXP -- as indicated in his FT profile -- he might find an AA Basic Economy fare on flights operated by AA itself to be very good value, after applying his elite benefits to such a fare.

The EU3 & US3 cartels are matching fares offered by Norse, so take a look at the route map of Norse to find decent offers.

By the time you include the basic things to make it parity with a traditional carrier (cabin bag, basic seating, some food) you end up just as expensive if not more.
