Ryanair forced to land in Belarus
Flight from Athens to Vilnius, but intercepted by military and forced to land in Minsk so Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko could arrest one of his critics. Wow.

A scheduled commercial passenger flight getting a military escort for an off-route grounding in a country other than the flights origin and destination against the wishes of the airline in peacetime? This kind of stuff is a recipe for trouble, and I can only hope no other country thinks this is acceptable.

The acceptability or not of this event will be judged by the international response. It must be harsh and immediate from the EU, the USA, ICAO, and any country that values freedom of the skies. Probably, Russia should feel the pinch for this in some way as well, as this would not have happened without Putin's prior knowledge.
I'm sure that certain factions of the USA's right wing party are also paying attention to what happens, already trodding down this path swiftly by monitoring journalists of critical networks...

Almost of necessity, the cause of the diversion of the Ryanair flight discussed here, involves a discussion of politics, well beyond the proper scope of FlyerTalk's airline forums.
As there is an active thread on this very incident in FlyerTalk's OMNI/PR forum, and everyone who has participated in the current airline forum thread is OMNI-qualified, I'll close this thread.
