Wizzair delayed flight and EU 261/2004

Flew FMM-VAR yesterday with wizzair and our flight landed 3 hours and 9 minutes late. The reason given was due to the late arrival of the incoming flight. After doing some investigation, I found out that the plane had been diverted early in the morning, some 14 hours before due to bad weather, which had a knock on effect on the following 4 flights (ours being the 4th flight in the list).

Can airlines deny compensation in this case as extraordinary circumstances?

No, knock-on effects are not generally considered to be "extraordinary circumstances".
