CAL opens new aviation history museum

2004/11/2
By To Lee The China Post

China Airlines (CAL) opened its aviation history museum yesterday, documenting 45 years of growth of the organization.

The company, with only a staff of seven when it was first established, was founded on Dec. 16, 1959. Hundreds of documents, aircraft models, crew uniforms, in-flight utensils, and other commemorative items, which took CAL employees one year to collect, will be showcased in the museum.

Lien Chen-kang, 80, the first captain to be employed by CAL, was also present at the unveiling ceremony. He was the first to pilot the flight route from Taipei to Sun Moon Lake with an amphibious PBY-5A aircraft.

The museum will be divided into five sections, which will feature items that document the founding and growth of CAL. Fourteen models of planes employed by the airline throughout the years will also be on exhibition. In order to attract visitors, the museum also displays several interesting facts and statistics. Through the opening of the museum, CAL hopes it will reinforce the company's image of innovation.
