PVG-SYD | Xiamen or China Eastern?

Heading down to Sydney October 2nd. Option 1 is fly China Eastern direct for roughly $1500. Option 2 is Xiamen with a connection, but at $900. Both would be coach flights. Thoughts?

Other things to consider
  • Departure & arrival time?
  • Earning frequent flyer miles?
  • Seat selection?
  • $600 is a big % difference. Could buy an exit row seat on Xiamen if that is an option

Schedules are fairly the same, so not a large issue there.

They're both Skyteam partners, I believe CE will earn me more, but I am already a Platinum Medallion for 2019 and won't be getting anywhere near DM, so not as critical.

Not sure on the seat selection aspect.

I’d say that sounds expensive.....

you flying one way? I just looked at PVG -SYD return leaving 2nd October and returning 16th and it’s around $1350 in business on China southern vis CAN.

I was more curious about the overall product. 10.5hrs in a CE A330 or 9.5hrs in the Xiamen 787. I haven't flown a 787 before, so that's something.

That would be a lot better than 9.5~10.5 hrs in coach for $900~$1500

Problem is the total transit times are nearly 24hrs. The price is right, but its showing 6+ hour layovers going both ways.

I know which I’d prefer but fair enough. Have a look at China Easter return in economy then. It comes in under $1000.

How are you building the itinerary?

just used skyscanner 2nd - 16th October pvg-syd. There are cheaper 1-stop connections but that’s the cheapest direct fare.

Do you have enough miles to upgrade? Otherwise I’d be looking at CZ. With that lay over you would be eligible for a hotel room, I think. A day in Guangzhou might be quite pleasant...

Oh yea, sitting on over 300K Skymiles with anticipation of a nice trip with my wife next year. But could spare some.

Currently leaning towards saving some coin and giving Xiamen a shot.

JK, Xiamen is probably out. I'll get, at most, 10% MQMs. That's not going to help me get to PM this year.
