Moderators removing posts?
Hi,
For the most part, the moderators have a thankless job and do it very well. Yesterday, I noticed some of my posts to a thread in UA MP were summarily deleted. No PM to me, nothing. Just, poof! Posts gone.
In the past, I had seen moderators remove the content of a post, but leave the posting itself behind, along with a note in the "Edited" field, saying why the content was removed.
Has there been some change in policy? If I crossed some line, I'd like to know what it was, not just have my posts removed and not be told about it.
Thanks for reading!

I know I'm not Randy, but this has happened to me also.
Sometimes you may not see a post/thread because you didn't log out on your previous trip to Flyertalk. This may be a technical issue. Try logging out; and/or, clear (delete) cookies.

Thanks for the question and I don't mind answering, it's really pretty self-explanatory.
A few things, Moderators when they have the time have and will continue to try and notify members when they alter any of that members posts. The key here is when they have time. As you note, it is a rather thankless job and part of that thanklessness, is the fact that Mods for the most part give up most of their time enjoying FlyerTalk as you do, to spemd time reading and responding to the countless threads that everyone posts - good and bad. As we must always remember, most if not all of us are travelers, some more traveled than others but with real jobs and real families and other responsibilities in life. So when we can get any Moderatro to give up parts of things in their lives to assist making FlyerTalk possible, then I'm all for respecting them.
In the case of the thread you are talking about, the thread title is: "Not even a snack in first now???"
It is assumed upon reading that thread title the members of FlyerTalk can clcik and read about a members experience with snacks on board a United flight.
Well, as it is, on the first page alone, the Moderator had to delete 12 posts by members, two of them yours. Why? Well, it seemed that a number of members wanted to discuss filthy langugage. Why that became the primary focus of the exchange among a number of members, I can guess but have no answers for.
Here are your two missing posts:
"Hmm... I had no idea that winkydink had off-color connotations. Perhaps I should change my handle to WinkyTheFearless?"

Huh? What are you talking about?"
I'd have to say at first and other glances, that your posts were not all that relevant to the thread topic. It looks like the Moderator was called to the htread by a number of RBP's and decided to try and keep the thread open by simply deleting those 12 posts, like yours, that were off-topic.
Probably a ggod move by the Mod since he/she did not decide to close the thread, rather trying to clean it up and keep it open for others to learn from and discuss.
As well, it appears that the Mod just did not have the time to send memos to the 10 different members who constituted the 12 off-topic posts, such as yours.
Now the question is, is that bad or a change in policy? There is no change in policy. When a Mod has the time to let a member know, he/she often does. In cases when "filling out the paperwork" was a pretty daunting job it might just be assumed that members such as yourself know that they posted off-topic. Clearly you do remember these posts of yours? Clearly you don't consider them contributing to the thread topic?
I see no harm in your asking this question. As well, i see no harm in the actions by the Moderator. I would like to think that if the edited/deleted post was a single incident in a thread, the Moderator would have contacted the member. But then again, I don't know if he/she checked in between flights, was on the way to a meeting at work, was just checking in right before sitting down to dinner - all the things that we all go through daily.
Again, no change in policy by the Moderators and we hope no change in observing the rules of FlyerTalk and that is to try very hard to contribute to the thread topic at hand.
I think that one of your posts was deleted because it contained a quote from another member that was deleted and leaving that would have confused others who wanted to read the thread for the information.
As for me, I've got to run to the airport, got a flight to catch from Cambodia to Saigon (HCMC). Yes, we're all travelers hoping we have those precious minutes we can all contribute toward a great FlyerTalk.
I hope this solves the mystery and thanks for your many positive contributions to FlyerTalk.
Cheers,
Randy

Hi,
For the most part, the moderators have a thankless job and do it very well.
