No, love handles http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Besides, I do find your position quite intriguing, first you are almost to the point of calling for all the heads of all moderators, and declaring victory

And now this?

I am not sure, but who am I talking to here?

That's an omission on my part. I don't believe you to be lumped in with any other posters for the purposes of our discussion here.

Obviously, we will agree to disagree on the merits.

You are a Moderator. You are supposed to urge OTHERS to ignore trolls and personal barbs. But you CREATE them, not ignore them, from where i am sitting.

Please give this some thought. In this week of all weeks, your posts are not doing any service WHATEVER to Randy or Flyertalk would be my best guess.
[snip]

After reading your posts can you honestly declare you feel they had anything to do with making FT a better and more enjoyable place to be?

You amaze me. Really.

You violate Randy's trust. You (again) stir up a hornet's nest of personal barbs and attacks, and have the gall to preach to another member about behavior in the proverbial sandbox? From a very practical standpoint, even if you had a coherent and defensible point, it is incumbent upon members to take sage advice from those who are good examples of a particular practice. It then stands to reason that to take advice about standards and behavior from someone who has previously enjoyed an enforced (not voluntary) hiatus would probably not be in any member's best interests.

What respect does Randy or any member of the community owe someone who has violated the rules, integrity, and trust of the community? Note that this question has never been answered.

How is it an omission if you actively state that I belong to a certain group of posters I am supposedly sharing something with? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/confused.gif

And I don't even know what merits you are talking about!

I'll take that as a "NO" shall I? Rather sad actually.

ozstamps: We're all sorry that you feel that you don't have anything to do with making FT a better and more enjoyable place to be, but thanks for being honest about it.

It is the members' job to post information on travel, points, and miles, and then replies or responses on their opinions on travel, points, and miles. It is moderators' job to moderate the discussion. Stop flaming, trolls, and to keep the discussion on topic.

Nowhere in there do members have the right or obligation to ban or timeout members. That right or obligation is Randy's.

Moderators had a great forum for discussing moderation. Some moderators began discussing non-moderation issues in that forum. That seems to me to be a problem.

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gif That sums it up nicely.

Perhaps I should provide an example of what can happen to a society or organization (government) when people make a habit of threatening people's jobs on a regular basis. Note that I am not endorsing the contents, racism, or viewpoint contained on this website.

See http://www.saipansucks.com

Can't we all just get along, drop the cliques and grudges, stop pestering Randy to join "our" side, and desist from trying to have the last word?

Peace be with you.

Ok, I will stop advocating for a group hug as it is apparent to me that there would be too many daggers present and the opposite of the desired effect would result.

As to the question of who moderates the moderators when their disucssions veer from constructive moderation discussions into frustration venting to name calling to slander, I do think that the best answer is sunlight. If I have done something that causes the mods to have an honest discussion about my behavior, seeing (without being able to comment on) that discussion would be informative and would even provide guidance for me to self-regulate my perceived transgression. It would also assure that the mod discussion stayed in the bounds of constrcutive discussion.

But, lacking same, as I have noted before, I think the best ombudsman has and will always be Randy himself. I DID see at least one attempt by him in the selective mod posts that were revealed here that he had warned mods about getting too personal. Yes, he is my favorite benevolent dictator (a true term of endearment) and this is his sandbox.

But I do expect mods to live up to similar standards as they enforce on the rest of the community. I KNOW that is a difficult standard to achieve. I freely admit that were I a mod I could not do it.

Whether you are a mod or not, take a look at the threads surrounding this whole topic with a Mod hat on. How many TOS violations do you see here (including personal mentions and derogatory comments). How many have YOU (and by you I mean EVERYONE personally) made? How many posts are meant to denegrate and how many are meant to be constructive?

There seems to be some intractable (and I do not use this term lightly) hatred among the community. Those hatreds appear to color ever facet of participation.

It is just sad that such a powerful tool for brining out the best in folks and brining folks together has become a conduit for dividing people and bringing out the worst in them.

Is it too late to set hatreds aside and accept all individuals for whatever it is they have to give, whether you would choose to break bread with them or not?

It looks like the question came in the middle of a complicated and lengthy movement of threads. I think by now that the answers offered up would be enough to complete the answer to the question.

Thanks Punki for allowing me to fill in the blanks for you.
