Inappropriate UA topics moved by moderator.

1000l00 recently started two very UA specific threads:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTML/024360.html

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTML/024367.html

Here is another very specific UA thread started by a brand new poster Mrotenfan:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTML/024378.html

Despite the fact that all of these threads were not only UA specific, but even limited to loyal UA flyers, a moderator closed and moved them. ?????

I, for one, truly believe that posts should only be moved when there is no justification for leaving them in place, and would personally prefer that, in the future, the UA forum be moderated with a very light hand. What do you think?

Punki Dec 22, 2003 4:58 am

Whoops, sorry. What I meant was UA Topics inapproriately moved by moderator.

Thats what I get for posting when I should be sleeping. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redface.gif

Jim Phillips Dec 22, 2003 5:38 am

These were coupon/discount giveaways, so they were moved to Coupon Connection.

Can you imagine what the UA forum would look like if anything UA-related at Coupon Connection was posted at the UA forum instead?

Punki Dec 22, 2003 5:49 am

So, Jim Phillips, is it your vote that coupon giveaways which are strictly limited to UA flyers should be moved to coupon connection?

Seems odd to me, as the posters have clearly stated that only loyal UA flyers qualify and I would assume that most 1ks rarely look at Coupon Connection--I know I don't. Of course I could be wrong about others.

Moderator2 Dec 22, 2003 5:53 am

There has been a material increase in postings on the UA forum that by Randy Petersen's definitions, belongs in Coupon Connection. Jim Phillips second sentence mirrors the moderators opinions.

As Randy has also made comments about macro subject discussions in specific forums, this topic belongs elsewhere, so I am moving it to the "Randy Petersen" board.

Hmmmmmmm. Interesting, Moderator 2, but it still makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to me.

If I have a coupon that I am only willing to give to a loyal UA flyer, why would I want to post it on Coupon Connection? (Actually, I wouldn't post it on Coupon Connection.) I am sure that if I did, I would get a ton of responses from folks who are not what I would consider "loyal UA flyers" and I would have to find a polite way to turn them down.

Further, how would a really "loyal UA flyer" find my offering? Coupon Connection appealed to me when I was a newbie (not what I would not consider a loyal UA Flyer) back when I didn't have enough upgrades of my own to support my first class habits. Now that I do, I never go to Coupon Connection. Do other 1ks often go there?

OBTW, to the best of my knowledge, all AS upgrades, etc., are exchange on the AS forum. Why should it be any different for UA?

I can see no way where the UA forum or UA flyers, or anybody else can benefit by such a "rule". What is the reason behind it?

BlondeBomber Dec 22, 2003 6:12 am

Have to agree with Punki on this one (don't we always agree?).

On most fora I think exchanges for upgrades etc are for loyal flyers. On Air Canada Aeroplan it certainly is. I thought coupon connection was for everything else that didn't fit. I think this sort of decision should be up to the poster--i.e. where it could fit nicely in either forum. Let the poster decide who he/she wants to appeal to (loyal or newbies; the refined or the great unwashed--hey that include me http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif)

Punki,

What precludes someone from posting on the Coupon Connection that recipients of the coupon must be a regular UA forum participant? I've seen similar provisos in Coupon Connection over its life.

Regards,

Craig (speaking as me, not moderator)

Punki Dec 22, 2003 6:39 am

Nothing precludes that limitation from being included, but nothing precludes the "unwashed" as BlondeBomber calls them, http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif from responding despite the limitation.

Moreover, the real target audience, loyal UA flyers are highly unlikely to see the offering.

I notice in the Coupon Connection, that 1000K00 has withdrawn his offer until his post is returned to the UA forum. I can see his point of view. The whole process feels heavy handed and unecessarily controlling.

I am all for moderation when it actually enhances FT, but this is just silly.

I totally agree with the actions of the moderators on this one. Coupons and offers like that belong in Coupon Connection.

Any giver can describe their requirements for their gift... no matter where the post is located. There is nothing stopping a newbie in UA forum from replying as well.

We have to get over this "I want Flyertalk to be organized in my way or I will post a complaint" mentality. The moderators have made it clear that they are following Randy's directive.

Why do we have to constantly revisit this argument everytime someone gets unhappy about where something is posted?

{SIGH}

William

Seems perfectly logical to me. As one of the busiest (if not, THE busiest) boards on FT I think it's appropriate that it gets MORE moderation than the other boards. But as always; Did you email the moderator before posting your complaint? Did the member in question complain as well or are you complaining on their behalf?

CameraGuy Dec 22, 2003 7:53 am

Has it been 6 weeks already????

My how time flies when the moderators do their jobs properly.

I would BEG the moderators to NOT cave in this time.

If "loyal" UA flyers don't read the Coupon Connection then that is their fault, you can hardly blame the moderators for that...

Why was it withdrawn? 5 UA 1K's had replied before it was moved, many offers are made in Coupon Connection with added rules, like for people with more than 100 posts, 1K's only etc...

Moving posts to the correct forum DOES enhance Flyertalk. If you find the moderators action "silly" then contact the moderator or Randy but these constant (now monthly) complaints do nothing to "enhance" FT.

I'm personally amazed at just how "confusing" this whole flyertalk thing is for some people. Imagine that, there are different forums for different airlines AND activities!! How can they keep up?!?!?

BlondeBomber Dec 22, 2003 8:51 am

Nothing about caving in. This is about common sense. I venture to say that if you added up the posted coupon/upgrade posts in ALL the forums that you would have an overwhelming number (perhaps hundreds a day--it is already dozens a day) in Coupon Connection.

Why not leave Airline/Hotel/Car Rental specific things in those fora? Trolling through hundreds of posts a day to look for coupons is NOT user friendly when the INTUITIVE thing is to look in those fora that you regularly visit.

As I said, I think this should be a poster specific thing. If a poster feels that he wants to appeal to his audience on a particular forum, let it be. If the interpretation of the moderators continues to be enforced then many will probably start a thread in the appropriate airline/car rental/hotel forum saying. "I just posted free upgrades at XXXXX in Coupon Connection" so it won't reduce the number of posts, it will increase them AND the workload of moderators who will just have to close them down.
