Originally posted by Punki: It will be interesting to me to see how the overall issue of whether or not FlyerTalkers will be allowed to offer gifts on individual program forums in the future, plays out * We're human and won't always make the technically correct decisions (as computers might, if not programmed by humans) * But that the 'correct' approach is for coupons - whether given away freely or exchanged - to be handled in the Coupon Connection forum. There will likely not always be 100% consistency on this. But this is the preferred approach -- and all of us reading this thread ought to do our best to follow this approach. Actually, I appreciate the clarification as well. The outcome makes the most sense to me, but I hadn't thought it through completely myself. So now that we have this resolution, let's just enjoy our community and each other -- and carry forward the spirit of Flyertalk and the season throughout the rest of the year, being charitable to our fellow posters and moderators. When there's a concern about moderation, try to address it first directly with the moderator. And keep metadiscussion of board policies here in this forum rather than the individual airline forums. But even more importantly, just enjoy Flyertalk for what it is! And let's not get too involved with the particulars of metadiscussion in the first place. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |

I am not splitting anything. I honestly thought that posters had a choice of posting gifts either in the Coupon Connection or within the program forum. From all of the gifts and requests for gifts I have seen posted within program forums, it is obvious that others believed this as well. I would not be at all surprised if there were Moderators who were unclear on the issue as well.
Now the matter has been clarified for all and it turns out that I was wrong. It has been known to happen. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif Thank you for your post Randy and please don't worry about me. Unpleasant comments from folks who are consistently unpleasant just roll off, like water off a duck's back. Sadly, however, agressive behavior often does make it difficult to keep a thread on track. Hopefully the new software with the Ignore User function will discourage aggressive behavior. He, along with with several others who have posted to this thread, obviously carry grudges with regard to long-past moderation on MoreMiles, and apparently blame me for their issues, but the truth is that none of them were actually banned. Some may have been deservedly suspended by majority vote of all MoreMiles founders, but it was a long time ago and not worth the effort for me to go back and check the records, although others may be so inclined. . * . * . * Wishing the happiest of all days to all of you. Is that done by majority vote as well, or by the MoreMiles founder or moderator? What are the criteria used for selection? Not that I'll have a lot of time -- after 21 years of total federal government service (including military) and 4-1/2 with the CNMI government, I'm starting up a solo law practice (Guam & the CNMI) near the end of February. Originally posted by Mountain Trader: Punki- Nice try, but if you use consistent logic to try to understand the way these boards are being handled, you'll only drive yourself nuts. You can't have UA-only coupons on the UA board 'cause, gee, they belong on the Coupon Board. How childish-I've got status on UA and I never go to the Coupon Board. Meanwhile, over on Miles Buzz (one of the better moderated boards, in my view) they have dozens of posts on US Savings Bonds interest rates, which connects to Miles Buzz about as much as discussing the warranty on tires you buy with your credit card. It would be great to have a hands-off policy, let threads of no interest die a natural death, and let others stay alive for those who want to participate. Well, that ain't what's happening. Randy addressed this a month or two ago-his only public statement that I've read- to the effect that, overall, things are ok with him as they are. I have been posting less to FT than I used to, in part because of the frustration with inconsistent moderation, and in part because I am surfing elsewhere to find more hard info on FF programs' award availability and other value issues. Now we can watch this thread for all the neat-and-tidies to come in with "I think the moderators do a great and we should all support them". Now there's a thread that never closes. ------------------ dallasflyer, Let's put the fun back in FlyerTalk! |
SPN Lifer, if you would like to e-mail me, I will be happy to explain what happened.

I am reluctant to discuss MoreMiles issues here because they are decidely "off-topic", but, since issued have been raised by others, I will attempt to clarify some points.
There was a Beta Test period in the beginning of MoreMiles, when membership was by invitation only. There were folks, who had apparently been given the address by friends, who attempted to register before the site was ready to accept general registrations. Once the site was open to general registration, no one, who was properly identified was denied registration, not even any lawyers. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif If you attempted to register after the site was officially opened and were still not accepted, it would only have been because not all the required steps were followed. If anyone has had a problem, please let me know and I will do what I can t help resolve it. To further clarify, MoreMiles was most certainly not created with any negativity toward FlyerTalk and/or Randy. Quite to the contrary, Randy was not only fully informed and advised, but even asked if he had any problems with the development of the site. I can't speak for anyone else, but I have always loved FlyerTalk right from the start. Does that mean it is perfect? Heck no. Does that mean that I have to agree with every single policy? Absolutely not. I am certain that there will continue to be times when I disagree with certain FlyerTalk policies and when I do, I am certain that I will continue to speak my mind, but I promise I will do so politely and without resorting to insults and or any other type of personal attack against anyone (no matter how tempted I might, from time to time, be). http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif [This message has been edited by Punki (edited Dec 24, 2003).] |

I have to say I agree the airline boards NEED to be 99.9% related to airline topics or they will get unweidly.
I have at times mentioned in the course of an on topic post about HK49s, I have 2 x HK49s expiring this month I just noticed looking at my account. Or in a thread about staff coupons I could use a '15% off PMO Friends' for next week ticketing if any staffer reading might have one etc. Or as occured last week or so I mentioned the UA two for one biz deal coupon only Oz folks get, and I had a very happy UA reader receive it, along with an expiring $20 off 1K Duty Free chit I mentioned in a Duty Free thread. I'd never bother starting a CC thread on these and just let them expire, but glad to see someone helpful to the Forum get them. And guess what while the thread usually focuses no more on that post there is usually an email/s from folks I know and something happens in these areas. I have never had a word or email from Chuck or Craig etc over this as I hope they agree these are incidental to a valid discussion and very seldom used. I think I have seen Premex and others make the occasional such post with a wink or smile etc, if it fell perfectly within a thread flow. But I agree if a thread was started as 'Have $400 VDB voucher I can't use' or 'Does anyone want to swap 2 Sweeties for 3 x SWUs' or whatever, the true home for that is CC and the bigger Forums wold become a mess if that was not adhered to. ------------------ ~ Glen ~ sipping bubbly from a UA 747-400 exit row 15 near you SOON! |
I'm starting to wonder if the objective is really of fundamental merit or if it's just someone trying to get their way.

I'm 100% w/ Randy & Premex on this one (and techgirl, gleff & a few others too). Cheers.
And isn't going back/forth on this issue a waste of valuable limited internet time? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif And speaking for myself as a 1K MM, Coupon Connection is where I look if I'm going to offer or need something. Since Coupon Connection can apply to more than just UA, it's easier & faster to check there than UA, Hilton, AA, etc, etc, forums. Happpy Holidays all - we've got 22" of fresh snow at the top of Sequoia Natl Park - it's gorgeous outside. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif ------------------ Sharon [This message has been edited by SkiAdcock (edited Dec 26, 2003).] |
