FWIW, Randy, the definition for Coupon Connection clearly states:

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">The exchange forum for legally transferable coupons issued by various frequent traveler programs (these include free car rental days, 50 percent off hotel stays and upgrade coupons). This is N-O-T a forum for anything related to the buying, selling or bartering of airline awards. All exchange as a result of this forum are based upon free issuance and community spirit.</font>
Neither of the UA posters in question, mrotenfan or 10001k00 were remotely interested in exchanging anything. All they wanted to do was make a free and open gift to a know UA flyer who posted in the UA forum. I know that this action made 10001k-00 angry and I don't blame him for being upset.

Where, pray tell, is it written that one may not offer gifts on FlyerTalk program forums? Is that really the type of ambience we want to create? IMHO, the more joyful, friendly and surprising FT becomes, the more interesting and compelling it will be.

Um... isn't this what some of these exclusionary YahooGroups/private e-mail clubs that some (*cough*) folks participate in are for?

I don't see what the big deal is. I was looking to get rid of a couple of SweetSpots a couple of weeks ago. I really didn't want to abide by the FT rules in doing so and I also wanted to know the person I was negotiating with so I took it to private e-mail.

I haven't been on FT *nearly* as long as some... nor been to as many DOs, weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc. yet I knew a quite a few (more than I could count on my fingers/toes) folks who would meet the criteria of being - someone I knew, someone who could use the stuff, and someone who knew HOW to use the stuff.

I got several nice responses. So I guess if we don't like the way that Coupon Connection, people who have other connections (like dozens of friends made on FT) would certainly have other ways of giving away something that they can't use. And that wouldn't waste limited valuable internet time at all.

hfly Dec 22, 2003 8:38 pm

In the good old days of FT, jumping back several years people posted every idiot internet scheme and conga line in "The Buzz". It became stupid and ridiculous. I personally remember making many appeals for a seperate forum to be carved out as it was annoying and there were so many that almost everything else was being knocked off the front page within a matter of hours.

I recall certain people arguing against this as The Buzz was a more convenient place for them. This is/was bull. It would seem that certain people are just never happy and that these same certain people have been going on and on for months if not years about how each and every change or bit of moderation will "kill" FT.

It would also seem that these people have no sense of reality as in fact FT has grown in leaps and bounds and pretty much all of their predictions have been so off base as be comical.

Punki Dec 22, 2003 9:05 pm

Yes, techgirl, that is exactly what I said I do. I would just like to have the option of offering a gift to folks on the program forums other than Coupon Connection, were I so inclined.

If I can't, I can't, but it would make FlyerTalk a better place.

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Where, pray tell, is it written that one may not offer gifts on FlyerTalk program forums?</font>
Punki...there are thousands of activities that are not specifically excluded from FlyerTalk by declaration! That doesn't mean that they would be allowed or accepted.

Besides, another problem Punki, is that hundreds, maybe thousands of Coupon Connection offers (past and present) don't state they are looking for anything in exchange. Some even say they are "gifts."

But upon emailing them, you find out they are looking for something back. "Pray tell," who's to know the truth? Who can know for certain? Who can pre-screen and verify that it is truly a free gift being offered? Answer: No one.

Solution: Coupon Connection! (or as Techgirl points out...private email).

If you don't like or trust Coupon Connection...that's very sad and too bad. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Gotta airline or travel program related gift: Coupon Connection.

Gotta non-airline or non-travel related gift: OMNI

IMHO.

BTW, do you care to make any comments about Randy's post up there? The one about moderators in general? And even his comments about the moderator's actions in this "incident?" I believe there were some points he made that were addressed specifically to you. Of course you don't have to.

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Randy is smart and certainly open to input--he may not change his mind, but in my experience he will always listen. IMHO, calm, rational discussion should be encouraged, not shouted down. Listening to the opinions of those who disagree with us, is often one of the best ways to learn.</font>
I think he did listen. There was plenty of discussion. And made a decision. It's just that you don't like it, IMHO. Next time (especially after FlyerTalk/Randy states their decision/position) I suggest you email Randy privately about any future or continuing concerns on moderator's actions or your interpretation of policy, rather than making a huge public incident of it.

For as Randy stated:

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Right or wrong, he was in a position to make a "judgment call."</font>

Hey, PremEx, I know you want to debate, but I am too busy and tired for that.

All I wanted to do was give away a couple of SWUs to a random cyber friend on the UA forum. If I can't, I can't. No big deal for me. I am sure they won't go to waste.

hfly Dec 23, 2003 4:58 am

A sI stated on the otehr thread. I did a search of ALL Punki's posts in the last year and she has NEVER EVER in that time offered up any such thing on the UA board. As a matter of fact the closest she has come to it was on the COUPON CONNECTION forum where she basically said that another poster would have to give his "first born clild" in order to get one of her precious SWU's!!

Before yesterday, her only verbiage on the subject was that she quite coveted hers and that she would indeed appreiate more of them.

She should feel free to either use the CC, or better yet go about what she has obviously been doing for at least a year and not actually give anything away on the UA forum, but claim that she wants to.

As for me, I will no longer give away a million dollars on the DL forum, or my private plane on any forum!!

Unreal!

PremEx makes MANY solid points, basically gutting your "argument" and this is your response.

Face it:

You have been unhappy with FT for over 2 years.

You were instrumental in the startup of a competing site that was designed to "Teach Randy about Moderation". That site FAILED, in a large part due to the moderation.

You are in the MINORITY of people here on FT who are unhappy with the moderation.

Whenever you start YET ANOTHER one of these threads, you ignore opposing points.

But, I would like you to keep it up. Why, they ask??

Every time you start this nonsense, more and more people see through the smoke and mirrors to the "Real Punki".

It's refreshing to see that, just like Old Faithful goes gushing up into the Yellowstone atmosphere on a regular basis, CameraGuy regularly seeks to get back at moremiles.org because he's still angry about being banned from over there. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Broken record, Otto.

You are posting knowingly false information. YET AGAIN.

But, you already knew that and just wanted to flame me. How you have survived this long is a mystery.

Randy Petersen Dec 23, 2003 7:26 am

I like some things about this thread - the question by Punki is legitimate to ask and for me and others to comment on and there are some things about this thread I don't like - there is absolutely no need to beat on Punki here. Those who have strayed into that habit would be reminded that this thread is my house and I ask you to wipe your feet before coming in.

As noted, it's all about population. Would this be different let's say three years ago. Probably. Last week, we averaged nearly 28,000 visitors a day. How can FT manage to make those visitors, some of whom are posting on this thread, comfortable in finding information they seek? Some will have just gotten off their first flight, others graduating from their parents frequent flyer miles to their own and others will have been lifetime Platinum and are introduced to FT from a seatmate on the last red-eye they took. A diversive group to try and satisfy and more importantly to guide. FT will never be perfect (and for that fact, neither is eBay since I am too intimidated to figure out where the deals are on that Web site and who is behind the deals), but I think we'd all find that given our traffic, our penchant for opinions the world of topics over and our differences (I still remember sitting next to CameraGuy at a Catman Do with him being a target of some of my frustration of his posting at the time. The point being that we all still can see each other face-to-face despite our occasional differences online), that FT is a wonderful story we can all be proud of.

Thanks for the question Punki and you were right to ask. This has helped many to clarify that particular forums posting requirements. Understand that myself, moderators and others won't get everything that belongs there correct, but we'll try with a little patience and understanding from our friends - our members.

And I apologize for a few of the comments by others in this thread regarding your comments. We don't always say what we mean nor mean what we say....

Punki Dec 23, 2003 7:29 am

To be perfectly accurate, OttoGraham, CameraGuy, was not banned from MoreMiles, although he is still apparently angry that some his posts were moderated--sometimes by me, sometimes by others. He, along with with several others who have posted to this thread, obviously carry grudges with regard to long-past moderation on MoreMiles, and apparently blame me for their issues, but the truth is that none of them were actually banned. Some may have been deservedly suspended by majority vote of all MoreMiles founders, but it was a long time ago and not worth the effort for me to go back and check the records, although others may be so inclined.

This, however, for me, at least, is Christmas (almost--my baby comes home tomorrow) and I just won't waste this happiest time of my year doing battle about anything that doesn't involve peril to my dear friends and/or family.

As to the issue at hand, I joyfully gave away by SWUs via another venue, and will e-mail all my employees tomorrow, offering my remaining companion certificates. Sadly, I don't have any 15% off coupons, but am thinking of buying a bunch of Entertainment Books, taking out the UA discount certs, and then giving the books away.

It will be interesting to me to see how the overall issue of whether or not FlyerTalkers will be allowed to offer gifts on individual program forums in the future, plays out, but for now I am on to Holiday preparations and celebrations. Wishing the happiest of all days to all of you.
